We’re hiring a cook!

We require a casual/on-call relief cook who is responsible for the preparation of the evening meal for 40 shelter residents.  This position is for occasional weekday, weekends and statutory holidays as needed.

  Responsibilities:     

  1. Menu Planning and Meal Preparation
  • In consultation with the House Coordinator plans the menu for evening meals for the women and children in the shelter.
  • Prepare dinner meal and special occasion meals.
  • Order food according to menu plan and budget.
  • Take the inventory of stock in pantry rooms and refrigerator/freezer units
  • Receive and put away all food deliveries in proper areas and according to shelter policy
  • Perform other duties or assignments as delegated by the supervisor
  1. Cleaning
  • Clean kitchen, pantry and storage areas including kitchen appliances and shelves according to the City’s established Public Health Standards.
  • Clean and sanitize cooking pots, pans and dishes after each meal.
  • Ensure the Food Hygiene shelter Regulations are carried out at all times.
  1. General
  • Work cooperatively as a member of the shelter staff team.
  • Maintain a positive and professional approach with staff and residents.
  • Take initiative at work.
  • Assist with other duties as required, from time to time, aiding in the operation of the shelter.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Food Handling Certification.
  • Certificate from a recognized culinary school considered as an asset
  • Related experience in menu planning, meal preparation and cleaning.
  • Previous cooking experience in a shelter or group home environment.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Good understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment and procedures
  • Knowledge of nutrition standards, sanitation regulations and safety standards
  • Good spoken and written communication skills in English language
  • Demonstrated commitment to women’s issues and anti-oppression/anti-racism.
  • Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, holidays and available to work with short notice.

Hours:                        Monday – Friday 1-6pm and weekend availability
Rate of Pay:              17.53/hr.
