Full-Time Cook

For over 50 years Nellie’s has been providing shelter and support for marginalized women and their children in the Greater Toronto Area. We are mandated to operate programs and services for women and children who had or are experiencing violence, poverty, and homelessness. Nellie’s works to lessen homeless for women and their children whether the cause is family violence, mental health, or any other reason that results in dealing with the impact from trauma. In addition to providing shelter, our programs are designed to reduce the isolation that often comes with abuse.

Our core operations involve our 38-bed emergency shelter for women and their children who are homeless or escaping violent situations. In addition to our shelter, Nellie’s operates Community Support and Outreach programs that provides after care support and follow-up services to women and their children after they leave the shelter, as well as transitional housing support for women living in the community who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless.

Nellie’s is currently looking to hire a Full-Time Cook. The Cook is responsible for the preparation of Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner meals for 38 shelter residents. This position requires lifting of 10-15 lbs.

JOB DESCRIPTION

1.Meal Preparation

  • In consultation with the Food Service Worker plans lunch and dinner menus for the women and children in the shelter
  • Modify or accommodate menu for vegetarians and residents on dietary restrictions in consultation with the Food Service Worker.
  • Weighing, measuring, mixing, and prepping ingredients according to recipes.
  • Steaming, grilling, broiling, baking, or frying meats, fish, vegetables, and other ingredients.
  • Take the inventory of stock in pantry rooms and refrigerator/freezer units
  • Receive and put away all food deliveries in proper areas and according to shelter policy
  • Reports damaged and/or inoperable equipment and fixtures to manager on duty.
  • Check and verifies all deliveries.
  • Record delivery temperature and put away the orders according to FIFO (first in first out) method.
  • Perform morning kitchen set up and/or evening kitchen shut down duties.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy and respect for customers in all front of the house situations.
  • Perform other duties or assignments as delegated by the supervisor

2.Cleaning

  • Clean kitchen, pantry and all food storage areas including kitchen appliances such as fridges, freezers, ovens and stove and shelves according to the City’s established Public Health Standards
  • Clean and sanitize cooking pots, pans and dishes after each meal.
  • Change or empty all garbage bins in kitchen as required during shifts
  • Clean and sanitize work stations such as all kitchen counters and sink
  • Clean and wipe up any spills in all food storage fridges and freezers
  • Ensure the Food Hygiene shelter Regulations are carried out at all times

3.General

  • Work cooperatively as a member of the shelter staff team
  • Maintain a positive and professional approach with staff and residents
  • Inform the Food Service Worker about all kitchen and health & safety related issues that need immediate repair
  • Replenish or restock food supply items in kitchen fridge, first floor and emergency food supply storage rooms as required
  • Assist with other duties as required, from time to time, aiding in the operation of the shelter
  • Attend all meetings as required by the supervisor and all employee’s organizational meetings and events.

4 PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
  • The employee is required to walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • The employee may be required to push a cart weighing 30 to 50 pounds.
  • Potential for superficial cuts and burns.

Qualification:

  • 2 years or more of culinary experience in
  • Diploma in culinary school or equivalent preferred
  • Prior experience in related food and beverage service and food preparation positions.
  • Thorough experience with hot and cold food preparation.
  • Excellent cooking skills
  • Good working knowledge of accepted sanitation standards and health codes.
  • Able to cook in different cultural food
  • Previous cooking experience for more than 30 people
  • Related experience in menu planning, meal preparation and cleaning
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Able to lift up to 15-20 lbs
  • Experience in and commitment to working within an anti-oppression framework
  • Able to work weekends
  • Food Handling Certificate an asset
  • Certified in recognized Safe Food Handling program preferred First Aid certificate preferred WHMIS certificate preferred
  • Must be bondable

Hours: 35 hours per week (Including weekends)
Salary: $19.93/hrs
