Nellie’s women shelter is encouraging applications for Relief Counsellors who can work the evening/overnight hours from 5pm-7am. Counsellors are responsible for the direct support and service to women in the shelter.
Responsibilities:
- Support and Service
- Completes assessment and intake of women requesting shelter
- Provides information and referral to both women in the community and shelter residents
- Crisis support to women both over the telephone and in shelter
- Individual counselling to shelter residents
- Acts as an advocate and provides support and accompaniment
- Plans and implements programs for shelter residents
- Facilitates house meetings and in-house support groups
- Mediates conflict between residents
- Aftercare support to women in community
- Provides daily support services to residents, such as providing TTC tokens, clothing, food, and first aid.
- Ensures the overall health and safety of all shelter residents
- Provide harm reduction supports to women
- Administration
- Maintains women’s files and completes all shelter documentation
- Maintains service statistics
- Completes all household and shift duties
- Report writing as required
- Social Justice, Community Education and Outreach
- Outreach and participation in community actions
- Public Speaking and community education as required
- Liaise with community support services
- General
- Commitment to working from a feminist, AR/AO and harm reduction framework
- Works co-operatively as a member of the shelter team.
- Attends regular team meetings, staff training sessions and planning meetings as required
- Assists with other duties as required, from time to time, aiding in the efficient operation of the organization
Qualifications and Experience:
- Grade 12 Diploma and 4 years of directly related work experience Or Post-secondary Diploma or Degree directly related to the position and 2 years directly related work experience
- Experience working with women in the areas of homelessness, poverty, and violence
- Demonstrated commitment to women’s issues and anti-oppression
Hours: No fixed hours. On call basis.
Salary: Step 1 Salary Grid: $24.51/ hour
