Summer Camp: Week 4

Posted on: August 2nd, 2013 by Nellie's No Comments

This week our campers have been running around all over town!

We’ve had some great excursions to Riverdale Farm, the Bata Shoe Museum and the Ontario Science Centre. We even went to The Beaches to fly our kites — it was a breeze!

We began this week with another successful art workshop about life drawing with Meghan, our OCAD leader, and an impromptu rain-day movie. We finished off the week with pinata-making and swimming. All in all it was a busy but fun week. The campers were very cooperative and willing to participate in all the activities and excursions.

Even though we were out and about, we still found time for our regular suggestion circle. This week’s topics were respect and the differences between inclusion and exclusion. The campers had great ideas and were always willing to share their contributions.

Next week we’re looking forward to our self-esteem workshop and the activities to be put on by our friends at One Fire Movement.

Summer Camp: Week 2

Posted on: July 23rd, 2013 by Nellie's No Comments

The campers had the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents this week. With a workshop led by an OCAD student, the kids got to practice their impressionist pastel drawings with an expert instructor! All the campers were really proud to take home their art projects.

All the games we play like Frogger, Silly Sally, and Heads Down Thumbs Up really give the kids a chance to be social and make friends. No one is shy about volunteering to be the leader!  We’ve started doing suggestion circles where we get the kids to brainstorm on a “real-life” problem that they may encounter. Our topics so far have been about listening skills and bullying. The kids always have great suggestions and everyone feels like their ideas matter.

We also had a great treat this week and went to the movies to see Despicable Me 2. Popcorn was a welcomed snack! We got rave reviews about this trip. The kids were laughing even long after the movie was over.

Baking was a great community-building activity. Being able to work as a team to make food, and then to sit together and eat is a great experience. Everyone was eager to participate and got to practice taking turns and respecting everyone’s contributions.

All in all, we had a great week!

Nellie’s Kids Summer Camp is in full swing!

Kids Camp 2013

We’ve had a lot of newcomers to the program this year so we’ve made sure to get to know each other. In the past few days, we’ve played a lot of games like octopus tag and even BINGO. We even got to make our own tie-dyed t-shirts!

We went to the splash pad and went swimming at our local Rec centre.

The campers also made a ME Tree to showcase their artistic talents.
