Thanks to our donors for their support during the holidays

Posted on: January 29th, 2024 by Nellie's No Comments

2023holidayparty2Here at Nellie’s, we are forever grateful for our community of supportive donors. Over the 2023 holiday season, we were overwhelmed by the generosity we saw from individuals, corporations, and neighbours who donated gifts for the women and their children at Nellie’s.

We cannot express how appreciative we are of the many donors who helped provide a happy holiday to our shelter and community clients. There are way too many people to thank, but here are just a few of the organizations who helped us make a difference over the holiday season.

Realstar Management

Thank you to Realstar, whose employees once again came together and donated much-needed items (including new toys, chocolates, wrapping paper, and gift cards) to help make this holiday season a happy one for so many families in our community. We’re so thankful that supporting Nellie’s has become your holiday tradition.

One Academy Leslieville

One Academy, a gym located in the Leslieville neighbourhood, has a mission to fill hearts with hope, bodies with strength, and minds with confidence — something we aim to do at Nellie’s as well. In December, One Academy ran a full day of community classes in support of Nellie’s. 81 members of the One Academy family worked together to raise $3,000 to help women and their children regain their footing after experiencing the effects of abuse and homelessness.

Miracle Toronto

It wasn’t a miracle, but rather a lot of hard work by organizers Nick Kennedy and Andree Moore, which resulted in an incredible $40,000 donation from Miracle on Bloor this year. Since 2019, this wonderfully kitschy Christmas-themed pop-up cocktail bar has raised over $150,000 to support Nellie’s programs and services.

Tobia Homes Royal LePage Estate Realty

The team at Tobia Homes, led by Diane Tobia, provided a holiday gift box with gift cards, toiletries and chocolates (a definite hit) for our residents for a second year in a row. Not only does Royal LePage Estate Realty support Nellie’s for the holidays, but they also provide us with ongoing monetary assistance.

We also want to thank:

  • Cineplex Odeon for helping us provide a gift to the teens at our shelter needing support over the holidays, because teens (especially young teen boys) are often overlooked during the holidays;
  • The GTA Shoebox Project for the amazing gifts for women and girls in our shelter;
  • Santa Comes to Bay Street for providing gifts for every child staying with us;
  • The Christmas Pyjama Project from Riverdale Wealth Management, for providing brand-new pyjamas to everyone in the shelter; and
  • CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish for helping to cover the cost of buying gift cards for our food program recipients.

A huge thank you to one of our generous donors

Vasie Papadopoulos

Here at Nellie’s, we are always forever grateful for the generosity of our donors near and far, in good times and in challenging times. And, as it is for many other essential programs and services around the city, these past few months since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, have been challenging for us.

It’s because of our generous donors that we have been able to continue to provide day-to-day necessities of life as well as much-needed programs and services that foster learning. And, we’ve been able to step up our cleaning and disinfection measures, offer additional support and services for therapeutic healing during this challenging and stressful time and then move all of the women and children into a nearby hotel when an outbreak spread through our shelter in late-April.

One such donor that we’d like to highlight is Rothmans, Benson & Hedges Inc. The company first supported Nellie’s with a $20,000 grant in 2018. They generously renewed their support in 2019 and again in early 2020.

“At Rothmans, Benson & Hedges, there’s a large focus for us to support women both corporately and in the community,” says Vasie Papadopoulos, Communications and Outreach Manager at Philip Morris International Inc. (Rothmans, Benson & Hedges’ parent company). “If we’re going to champion women internally, we wanted to look at some of the things we could do externally to champion women’s issues. That’s why we support Nellie’s. They help with employment, financial literacy, and more. And, then there’s the shelter itself. The more we support that, the more we align our company values at a very local level.”

Even though Rothmans, Benson & Hedges had already contributed to Nellie’s for 2020, when Toronto and much of Canada started shutting down in mid-March to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, Vasie quickly called us to ask what else we needed.

“This pandemic happened very abruptly. It was a big pivot for everyone,” says Vasie. “When things started happening, we looked at our communities and asked ourselves ‘how can we help.’ We knew the longer the pandemic went on, the greater the burden would be on their services and their funding.”

When we got that very generous call, we were in the process of hiring 2 relief cooks to prepare additional meals for the women and children in our shelter. To encourage everyone to stay inside as much as possible, we introduced additional daily prepared meals as well as regular snacks to our schedule. Previously, only dinner was prepared for residents, leaving each person to use the kitchen to prepare their remaining meals for the day with groceries provided by us. Hiring more cooks and purchasing food daily greatly affected our bottom line. Rothmans, Benson & Hedges immediately stepped up with an additional $25,000 donation to help cover these costs.

“They were facing a very large additional cost and we decided we could help Nellie’s maintain the shelter and pay for the cooks to keep families fed. It was so important to us to support Nellie’s at this very basic level of keeping their operations going,” says Vasie.

“We want to keep doing more and we want to keep showing the community that we support communities across Canada. This is our way at a local, grassroots level of demonstrating our commitment to the cities and regions we operate in.”

Thank you, Rothmans, Benson & Hedges and all of our donors, large and small. The women and children in our community count on us to be there for them when they need us and we thank every single person, community organization and corporation that is helping us to do so during this time.

To make a secure online donation, please visit our donation page. Or, you can make an even bigger impact by becoming a monthly donor. As a regular monthly supporter, your generosity provides critical and consistent funding towards our daily efforts to help women and their children impacted by abuse, trauma and homelessness. Automatic monthly payments are easy to set up, convenient, and create a lasting impact on the lives of women and their children at Nellie’s.

Sippin Santa

Sippin-Santa

Two Toronto bars serve up Christmas in support of Nellie’s

How do you best a kitschy over-the-top Christmas pop-up bar that serves up only speciality Christmas-themed cocktails while donating $1 from every drink sold to Nellie’s?

By opening up a sister location, of course!

During the 2018 holiday season, Nick Kennedy (owner of the bar Civil Liberties) and Lauren McKenna, drew a lot of attention from both the media and Torontonians alike when they opened Miracle on Queen Street. It was the Toronto franchise of the worldwide Miracle pop-up concept that brings holiday-themed drinks and over-the-top Christmas decorations to cities across the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia and Central America. Nick and Lauren’s project, which took over an event space on Queen Street West, was the first in Toronto.

The bar opened on Black Friday and after it closed its doors on Boxing Day, Nick and Lauren presented Nellie’s with a cheque for $30,000.

And so, this holiday season, Nick reached out to fellow bartender Alfred Siu, owner of Project Gigglewater on Dundas West to join in on the fun. While Miracle is serving up kitsch and Christmas cocktails (this time on Ossington Ave. near Queen St. W.) from November 25 to Boxing Day, Project Gigglewater has transformed into a Sippin’ Santa cocktail bar and is serving up a love of all things tiki Christmas. Both are planning to donate $1 from every drink sold to Nellie’s.

“It’s a lot of fun. I love Christmas and I love tiki as well,” says Alfred. “It’s a little different from Miracle. We’ve decorated in more of a beach theme with thatching and bamboo everywhere. There are still presents hanging from the ceiling but we’re serving tiki-style drinks rather than just Christmas cocktails and we are all dressed in beach shirts.”

The idea for Sippin’ Santa was born in 2015 in New York City specifically as a companion pop-up to Miracle but with a tiki twist. Think of Santa on a surfboard instead of a sleigh and palm trees instead of pine. This year, 27 locations across North America are celebrating a festive love of tiki.

“We’re a smaller venue than last year’s Miracle but we are hoping to raise around the same amount of money as they did,” says Alfred. “Nellie’s is a really good cause. I’m really impressed with the work they do in helping to reduce violence and in supporting women and children.”

Thank you, thank you to Sippin’ Santa and Miracle Toronto for your support of women and their children who come to Nellie’s. We are beyond grateful for your generosity.

Brighter Together builds storage solution for Nellie’s!

Nellie’s had a storage problem. Brighter Together built a solution

In recent years, Nellie’s has seen a dramatic shift in demographics — more women are arriving with their children to live in the shelter than ever before. Today, almost half of our current residents are children ranging in age from newborn to 15 years.

There are many challenges with having an influx of children in the shelter. For one, children have very different needs from their mothers and require different programs and services to help them work through the trauma they’ve experienced and the emotions they may be feeling in an age-appropriate way.

Another is more of a logistical challenge. More young children, means the need for more strollers at Nellie’s. But not only do we need more strollers, we also need somewhere to store them. Inside the shelter isn’t an option, because they have to be left in the hallways, which is a fire and safety hazard. And outside isn’t an ideal option either, because they risk being stolen from the yard and are subject to all weather conditions.

Dunya Knezic (who has also supported Nellie’s as a part of the committee that organized Karaoke for a Cause for the last three years) and Blayne Kumar of Bright Immigration decided to find a solution to Nellie’s problem. They formed Brighter Together, a non-profit arm of Bright Immigration, specifically to give Canadian immigrants an opportunity to give back to Canadian charities. Nellie’s became Brighter Together’s first charity of choice.

“Our approach is solutions-based problem solving and when we heard about Nellie’s, we quickly realized that there was no point in giving them strollers if they’re not going to be secured in a space,” says Blayne, owner of Bright Immigration.

“We had to build an outdoor shed.”

shed2

Through Brighter Together, they raised over $3000 to build a storage shed that met Nellie’s Shelter’s needs. A cookie cutter shed didn’t offer enough space. So Blayne and Dunya had to think outside the box and custom design and build a taller than average shed that maximized storage area. Construction took place on November 14, 2018. The new shed holds six to nine strollers at a time.

“The spirit behind Brighter Together is not just about donating to a charity,” says Dunya. “Anyone can do that. We are creating an outlet for Canadian immigrants to give back in a meaningful way. And we are so happy that supporting Nellie’s was our first project.”

Thank you Blayne and Dunya! Your generosity and problem-solving skills made a huge difference in the daily lives of the women and their children living at Nellie’s.

Urban Barn – Transforming Lives through Design

In July, the Queen Street West location of Urban Barn, Canadian home furniture retailer, redesigned and donated new furniture for the shelter’s living and dining rooms and children’s program area.

Residents were over joyed with the new look of their home, and the additional seating provided in the living and dining areas made the space much more comfortable for the increasing number of women and children that use the space. Apart from the beautiful new furniture, small touches like faux plants and wall hangings have helped make the shelter feel more homey and warm. The transformation of the kid’s room is remarkable from the bright colours, stripped rug to the kid-friendly poufs. The space is now more inviting to kids and moms alike. We are extremely grateful to Urban Barn for their thoughtful donation.

Giving Tuesday Featured Donor: Tony Roost

Today as part of Giving Tuesday we are featuring 2 people who have made an outstanding contribution to Nellie’s over the last year.

What is Giving Tuesday? “It is a new Canadian movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Cyber Monday. The “Opening day of the giving season,” it is a day where charities, companies and individuals join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and think about others.”

Tony Roost has been involved with Nellie’s for the past 3 years and has brought much joy and happiness to the women and kids at Nellie’s with his artists’ collective One Fire Movement. Here is what Tony has to say about being involved with Nellie’s.

How long have you been a supporter of  Nellie’s?

I did the first holiday donation drop off for One Fire Movement in 2010. After visiting other shelters the previous year I noticed how Nellie’s was very much a small grassroots type of organization. I saw how even a small contribution could make a direct impact on what they do there. From that point on I made it my mission to do more.

What or who has inspired you to give to Nellie’s?

What Nellie’s offers and the wonderful services they provide really resonated with me because I was raised by a single mom and considered her my best friend. Also I have 2 sisters and I think we need to respect and honour females in our society. My mom experienced physical violence as well as my sister. So what Nellie’s does there is very close to my heart.

What is your hope for the women and children at Nellie’s?

I hope that the women and children of Nellie’s find the safety they need as well as the strength to begin new lives happy and free. Knowing that others care enough to help and believe in them is a positive force and if we can come together to help each other then we can achieve amazing things. What Nellie’s does is amazing and the staff are some of the most warm-hearted compassionate people I have met in my life.  Sometimes just knowing that others care and will be there when you need it is a beautiful thing. I wish all of the women and children of Nellie’s love and happiness. We Are One.

Giving Tuesday Featured Donor: Natasha McNulty

Natasha and Aunt

Today as part of Giving Tuesday we are featuring 2 people who have made an outstanding contribution to Nellie’s over the last year.

What is Giving Tuesday? “It is a new Canadian movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Cyber Monday. The “Opening day of the giving season,” it is a day where charities, companies and individuals join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and think about others.”

Natasha McNulty (left) joined Team Nellie’s at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon this year and was the top fundraiser on our team, raising over $2000! Natasha joined Nellie’s in honour of her Aunt (right), a survivor of violence. This is her story.

Who or what inspired you to give to Nellie’s?

I am the adult face of a child who endured a life of severe abuse and watched as my Aunt and cousin endured their own. My mother suffered from addiction and mental health issues as a result of a life of various sorts of abuse and unfortunately I was the object in which she took out her pain on. She has passed away a couple years ago and I had the opportunity to understand her fully and forgive her for what happened to me. She was alone. There was no place for her to go. And nobody tried to understand her.

My Aunt is a beautiful woman with a heart that is full of generosity and love and although you can see the pain she has endured due to decades of physical and mental abuse she remains stoic. I don’t really know how my cousin is. He is hard to reach.  He’s quiet and doesn’t share much with many people.

I on the other hand struggled with addiction for over 20 years and am now over 2 years sober and turning 41 in December. A frightened child, an angry adult, and now I have to build a life on a new foundation with a clarity that I did not have before.

How long have you been a supporter of Nellie’s?

My best friend and I were walking in Leslieville last summer and had the opportunity to visit Nellie’s Open House.  The beautiful pictures on the wall and the energy of love and compassion that the space holds are magnetic. It made me reflect back on my life, wishing I had known as a child where to go for safety, where my mom could go, my Aunt, my cousin. Where someone would embrace us and let us know that we would and could be OK in a world that seemed like everyday was a war zone.

I had received and email from Nellie’s this year that they were raising money in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon and I decided that this is what I wanted to do for my Aunt. I wanted to show her how much I loved her as she has taken over as my mom and was there for me when my mom could not be. With all her adversity and chaos she never forgot about me. So I ran for her.

It was a beautiful morning on race day and I saw the sun and the moon meet in the middle of the sky together as if to wish each other a good day. Every moment I thought about how beautiful it is to be of service and to do something that is about kindness, compassion and love. This was not how I thought nor behaved as an alcoholic and drug addict. I raised a little over $2000 and although I didn’t think it was enough,  I ran to honor my Aunt, and I ran to show all of you women and children out there who are still suffering, feeling alone and abandoned, neglected and scared that although I do not know you, I love you.

What is your hope for the women and children at Nellie’s?

My hope for Nellie’s is that this beautiful place will grow and flourish and continue to be a beacon of hope and place of peace for those who need what I wished for my Aunt, my cousin, my mother and myself. That you will be taken care of, regain your self-worth, learn to love yourself, because you are worthy, you have value, that fear will no longer bind you and you will grow into the women and children you were put here to become.

So I thank you Nellie’s for allowing me to feel the joy and gratitude for even just a moment to be a part of your organization. It turns out my best friend was equally touched by our short visit to Nellie’s and she now sits as one of the board of Directors.  Our lives changed because we decided to meet for a coffee.

Happy National Philanthropy Day!

Posted on: November 15th, 2012 by Nellie's No Comments

Today, November 15th marks National Philanthropy Day.   Celebrated since 1986, this year Canada became the first country in the world to officially recognize National Philanthropy Day!

National Philanthropy Day is an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful and generous giving, volunteering and engagement that people offer to charities everyday. As stated on the official NPD website “National Philanthropy Day® brings together the entire philanthropic community—donors, volunteers, businesses, corporations, foundations, charities and young people, all working to improve the quality of life in their communities and change the world with a giving heart.”

(Staff with the Students from Monarch Park Collegiate who won us a $5000 YPI grant)

At Nellie’s we know the work we do wouldn’t be possible without the amazing community of people we have supporting us.  Whether it’s a generous financial donation, young students coming in to learn about Nellie’s for their YPI projects, musicians like One Fire Movement hosting a benefit show and spreading awareness, or a group of volunteers training and running to raise money for Nellie’s, each effort is appreciated equally and makes a tremendous difference to the women and children staying with us.

(Artist Christian Bridges at the One Fire Movement Benefit Show)

On National Philanthropy Day we want to say thank you to everyone who has contributed to ending violence against women by supporting our work and the work of shelters and women’s organizations around the country this past year! You are creating new beginnings and lives free from violence for women and children.

If you’re on twitter, you can participate in the Telus National Philanthropy Day Contest by tweeting about how you’re changing the world using hashtag #npdTELUS.  The 5 best tweets will win $500 for the charity of their choice!  Thank you for all that you do and Happy National Philanthropy Day!

Nurturing Ourselves Workshop

Posted on: October 31st, 2012 by Nellie's No Comments

This month We had our first Nurturing Ourselves Workshop at the shelter.  This workshop was created with the goal of providing the women at our shelter with a great afternoon filled with pampering and self care. While women are at our shelter, their days are always busy.  Between looking after their children, attending appointments, personal errands, and trying to stay calm during a difficult time, the physical and emotional toll can  be great. We created the Nurturing Ourselves Workshop to give women a space to relax, unwind, rejuvenate, and practice self-care. This new program will run twice a month.

Our first session was great! Women were very excited to do manicures, pedicures, and makeup and share creative tips on how they like to relax.   Despite the rainy, cold day outside, everyone’s spirits were lifted by the smell and taste of freshly baked cookies and hot coffee prepared by the staff.  Sharon, a mother of three particularly enjoyed the group as it gave her some time to relax and recharge after taking care of her children all day.  She had this to say: “On such a dreary, rainy day the Nellie’s Group made it sunny with manicures and taking care of ourselves.”

Thanks to the generous support of The Body Shop Eaton Centre, we were able to provide every woman with a lovely self-care product at the end of our first workshop.  Items included body lotion, body wash, shampoo and conditioner. These items added a special touch to the workshop and will remind the women to take some time out of every day to pamper themselves.

We look forward to our next session of the Nurturing Ourselves Workshop.

Team Nellie’s set to Run and Walk in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon

Posted on: October 11th, 2012 by Nellie's No Comments

Wow.  We can’t believe it is only 3 days until Team Nellie’s takes on the Toronto Waterfront Marathon for our second year in a row! Our team has been busy training and fundraising and we are excited to announce that this morning we surpassed the $10,000 mark! Congratulations to our Top 3 Fundraisers Anna Von Frances, Lori Loewen, and Victoria Lucas from Viva Pulse!

(Top Fundraiser Anna Von France)

Running a half-marathon or a 5K is no easy feat, and we feel honoured and privileged that our team members have made the commitment to run for a cause and help us end Violence Against Women. 100% of the money raised will go to support our programs for disAbled women, including our Women and Accessibility Support Group.  After we launched this group last year, the feedback from participants has been clear: there are not enough services for this population and our services to them are greatly needed.

This weekend we’ll be keeping you updated via our facebook and twitter pages while we’re at the run! Keep an eye out for some great pictures and messages and follow hashtag #STWM and #TeamNellies.  If you’re out on race day, and you see someone wearing this on their back, be sure to give them a cheer!

If you’d like to support our team by making a donation, you can do so here. Thanks to everyone who has supported us so far! Now, it’s time to rest up those legs and wait for Sunday.  GO TEAM!
