Meet Margaret Bryce, one of Nellie’s earliest board members

2023 marks 50 years since we first opened our doors. It is an incredible milestone, and a reminder of the shelter and support we have given to thousands of women and their children fleeing violence, trauma and homelessness since 1973.

In an occasional series, we’re highlighting stories from 50 years of Nellie’s, including former board members, volunteers, staff members, and more.

Margaret Bryce was one of Nellie’s earliest board members, acting as treasurer from February 1975 to November 1977. After being asked to join the board by founding board member Vicki Trerise (Vicki had to ask Margaret twice, in fact!), Margaret agreed, because she was passionate about housing and women’s issues. “I was very involved with feminism in those days,” explains Margaret, and helping to make Nellie’s a sustainable source of support for the women and their children who needed them was an amazing way of giving back to her community.

One of Margaret’s most impactful contributions to the history of Nellie’s is that she helped to negotiate the purchase of our original building. Initially, Nellie’s shelter building was a joint venture with the YMCA, who owned the house adjacent to their main building. But after the YMCA was demolished and the property was sold to a developer, Nellie’s was able to buy the property, with the help of a federal funding program for housing.

But even with their own property secured, Nellie’s was always “living hand to mouth”, as Margaret puts it. The board was constantly hard at work to find more money and become more sustainable. From applying for grants to doing outreach to city councillors and the media, the board knew that if they wanted to continue to help the women of Toronto who needed them, then they needed more financial support. Margaret shared one story of founder June Callwood making a radio appearance for a CBC morning show, and how after that interview the cheques started pouring in. “People would send cheques straight to the CBC because they didn’t know where else to send them,” recalls Margaret.

But while Nellie’s did start to receive a lot of support from Torontonians, there were still also many struggles. “At the beginning, we used to be accused of breaking up families,” says Margaret. “We mostly took in homeless women who were leaving marriages. Sometimes we took in single women who were leaving their parents or their boyfriends.”

Reflecting on her time with Nellie’s, Margaret feels very fortunate to have helped develop one of Toronto’s first women’s shelters: “I’m very proud of Nellie’s. I’m proud of what we did in the beginning, and I’m proud of how they were able to develop over the years, to get more stable funding, and [eventually] a new place to live, where they are right now.”

Leave a lasting impact: Support Nellie’s through your will

At Nellie’s, we’re eternally grateful for our amazing community of generous donors. From hardworking businesses to selfless individuals, Nellie’s is stronger because of every single person who has supported us over the years. Every donation helps ensure that we can always meet the needs of the women and their children living at Nellie’s, as well as those who need the support of our community programs and services.

May is Leave a Legacy Month in Canada, and we want to highlight this incredible way to support us through your will and estate plans. “It’s about how you want to ensure your memory lives on,” explains Ingrid Graham, Nellie’s director of development. “So if Nellie’s is important to you in your lifetime, leaving a legacy helps the organization continue the work that mattered to you.”

There are many reasons you may choose to leave a gift to Nellie’s through your will. For some, it’s about supporting a charity close to their heart, while for others it’s a way to ensure their memory lives on after they’re gone. Whatever your reasons, naming Nellie’s for a gift through your estate ensures that we can continue to support women and their children impacted by abuse, trauma, and homelessness. While government funding ensures our shelter provides a roof over our heads and beds to sleep in, the essential programs and services we deliver to meet the ever-changing and complex needs of our community are only possible because of our generous donors.

“When people hear the word ‘legacy’, they think that it has to be a transformative gift,” says Ingrid. “They think it has to be something large, but it doesn’t. It can be anything from $1000, to…well, the sky’s the limit. It all matters. It’s a great way to help organizations continue to do their important work.”

Here are a few of the ways you can leave a legacy to Nellie’s in your will:

Bequest a cash amount: This is the most common type of legacy gift. It can be a specific dollar amount, a specific gift, a percentage of your estate or the remaining balance of your estate after you’ve provided for loved ones.

Name Nellie’s as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy: This allows you to make a significant donation to Nellie’s at a relatively low cost, while protecting the value of your estate and possibly even providing you with a tax saving.

Gift of retirement saving plans: If you’re not survived by a spouse and have no dependent children (or have already made arrangements for your children), leftover retirement funds make an excellent charitable gift, and offer a tax-saving benefit on your estate.

Invest in charitable gift annuities: This provides a way to increase your income and reduce your taxes, all while making a substantial gift to Nellie’s to help us ensure we can always provide a safe space to the women and their children who need us.

To leave a legacy to Nellie’s, you need to know:

  • Nellie’s legal name is Women’s Hostels Incorporated
  • Nellie’s charitable registration number is 11930-2727-RR0001
  • Our mailing address is 970 Queen St. E., PO Box 98118, Toronto, ON M4M 1J8

Here are some other tips to consider when leaving a legacy:

Talk to your family about your wishes: These can be tough conversations but doing so will make it much easier for your loved ones when you pass away.

Get professional advice: A financial advisor can help you better understand legacy options and a lawyer can help you write your will.

Meet Neda Zanjani: One of Nellie’s newest board members

Neda-Zanjani-edit

Like so many of us, Neda Zanjani found herself becoming more reflective during the COVID-19 pandemic. While she spent more time at home, she began to think more about her life goals, and she decided that she wanted to find a volunteer opportunity that was meaningful to her. After learning about an opening on Nellie’s board of directors through a friend’s LinkedIn post, Neda applied and became one of our newest board members in September 2022.

“Nellie’s was a perfect fit,” says Neda. “I’ve always been interested in supporting women’s causes, especially those that are in vulnerable circumstances and need support the most.”

Born in England to Iranian parents, Neda and her family immigrated to Canada when she was 11 years old. It was this personal experience that also made Neda realize that Nellie’s was the right match for her, because many new immigrant women come through our doors each year. “That resonated a lot with me because I know exactly what that feels like — to come into a different country and start from scratch. I saw my parents go through a number of these challenges, too,” explains Neda. “I would love to have that type of an impact on these women who are in need of support or guidance.”

Whether when she was growing up, studying in university, or now in her career, Neda knows that the one thing that has made a significant impact on her life was having a strong support system. From her family members and friends, to her colleagues and her mentors, Neda credits this support to being critical to her personal and professional successes. “I think Nellie’s community work really serves the same purpose,” explains Neda. “It’s so invaluable and has so much potential to truly change the direction of these women’s lives — not to mention for the kids that come through the organization, as well.”

With over 15 years of experience in the financial services industry and as the current Head of Business Management, Wealth and Personal Banking at HSBC Bank Canada, we’re very fortunate that Neda has also joined our fund development committee. Knowing that the health of any charitable organization is dependent on funding, Neda hopes to contribute to these efforts by knocking on as many doors as possible to help increase our financial support. “I’m thrilled to be a part of that committee, and I hope to do my best to raise awareness and make as many introductions in the industry as I can,” says Neda.

Neda considers it a real privilege to be able to effect change through her new role at Nellie’s, and to work alongside a team of incredible women. “The women who work in this organization are so passionate about what they do and the community that they serve. The work that they do has never been so impactful than at a time like this, when there’s so many different challenges that are impacting the wellness of these women. I think contributing to Nellie’s is really an investment in the future of many women and kids who have already overcome extraordinary challenges, but really need our support right now.”
