On Sunday, October 18th, Helen Nowak will be participating in her third Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon as part of Nellie’s Team. Will you join us?

Thanks to generous supporters like you, the Scotiabank Charity Challenge raises much needed funds to support the innovative and essential work of Nellie’s Shelter. It connects us to dedicated people like you while having fun.

Helen first connected with Nellie’s thanks to the Scotiabank Charity Challenge. Searching for a charity to support for her 5k run, Helen found Nellie’s profile and an affinity for our work, values, and mission. In 2012, she joined our Board of Directors where she now serves as our treasurer.

Helen is a union-side labour lawyer by day with an impressive resume under her belt. She has experience working for both a federal public service union in Ottawa and a healthcare union in Toronto. While pursuing legal studies at McGill University, Helen involved herself in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.  These include pro bono work filling applications at the Human Rights Commission and the Police Ethics Commission on behalf of complainants, and providing legal information at a poverty law clinic in Montreal.

Prior to her legal career, Helen worked in the non-profit sector at the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research, and earned her master’s degree in Sociology/African Development Studies at York University. It is Helen’s skills combined with her passion for non-profits and advocacy that make her such an important member of Nellie’s family.

Why is Helen participating again this year? Because our funding has been frozen for the past four years. Fundraising is essential if we are to maintain Nellie’s integral services and advocacy for women and their children facing violence.

You can join Helen and others on Nellie’s Team. Help us reach our goal to raise $20,000 and end violence against women!

You can run, walk, or wheel! All money raised goes directly to support Nellie’s work with women and children. CLICK HERE TO JOIN US!

If you can’t run, you can still make a difference. Please consider sponsoring Helen and Nellie’s Team with a donation of $25, $50, or $100. You can click here to Sponsor Nellie’s Team.

If you have any questions or need help registering, please contact us at fundraising@nellies.org. Or call us at 416.461.8903 and ask to speak with Janna or Amran.

Thank you once again for making a difference in the lives of the women and children of Nellie’s.
