Shelter from the Storm Campaign supports shelters across the country

Posted on: August 11th, 2011 by Nellie's No Comments

This spring, Canadians across the country came together in support of the Canadian Women’s Foundation’s Shelter from the Storm  campaign.  Funds were raised from radio-thons, BootCamp events in partnership with Goodlife Fitness, the sale of merchandise and decals at Winners and HomeSense, and individual donations made on-line at http://shelterfromthestorm.ca In total $1.7 million was raised, and more than 400 shelters received a portion of this money, including Nellie’s

We are proud to report that the$5469 we received will go directly towards our programs and services for women and children.  We would like to thank The Canadian Women’s Foundation, Winners and Homesense as well all the individuals who generously donated to help support shelters for abused women across the country.  This contribution will make a great difference to all the women and children at Nellie’s who are beginning new lives, free from violence and abuse.

*Meet Team Nellie’s: Anna Von Frances*

Posted on: August 10th, 2011 by Nellie's No Comments

Meet Anna Von Frances, founder and director of Pink Mafia, creator of GirlFight, and outspoken advocate for the women and children at Nellie’s.

Is this your first race?

Yes Ma’am

Why are you running for Nellie’s?

Because I really want to help raise money for the new shelter which is desperately needed.

How long have you been running for?

On and off for years, but seriously (i.e. regularly) for just over a year

Where is your favourite place to run?

The ravine-it’s Toronto’s best kept secret

What message do you have for the women & children at Nellie’s?

This is a tough one. Truthfully, I’ve learned a lot more from the women at Nellie’s than they’re ever going to learn from me. This run is a great way to challenge myself and give back to a great charity at the same time. I guess a “thank you” would be appropriate.

What is your power song?

Anything I can sing along to. I monitor my breathing by singing (poorly), but when I really need to kick it up a notch “Power” by Kanye West never fails me.

Can you share a quote that keeps you motivated?

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.  And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Bike thank-you

Posted on: August 9th, 2011 by Nellie's No Comments

Wow. We’ve had such an extraordinary amount of support for our Bike Sharing Program that we now have enough bikes for all the women and children at Nellie’s!  Thank you to everyone who donated bikes, helmets, and locks and helped us spread the word about this initiative.

Your generosity and kindness have made it easier for the women and children at Nellie’s to get around our wonderful city.  Please stay tuned for a full program update next week.

On behalf of everyone at Nellie’s, thank you!

Enjoying summer around the city

Posted on: August 8th, 2011 by Nellie's No Comments

Last week the children at Nellie’s had a wonderful time exploring the city.  Take a look at what they were up to:

Taking a nice cool dip in the water at The Beaches on a hot day.

Visting Fort York.

Enjoying a cruise around the Toronto harbour.

A perfect day

You have not lived a perfect day, even though you have earned your money, unless you have done something for someone who will never be able to repay you.”          -Ruth Smeltzer, writer

(children and volunteers playing at the park last weekend).

*Meet Team Nellie’s: Patti Shaughnessy*

Posted on: August 4th, 2011 by Nellie's No Comments

Meet Patti Shaughnessy, Nellie’s Volunteer and long-distance walker.

Is this your first race?

No

Why are you walking for Nellie’s?

After many years of admiring what Nellie’s s provides for the women and children in their care, I became a volunteer in November of last year and can say with certainty, it is one of the best decisions of my life. I’ve seen first-hand what amazing programs and services they provide and will continue to support them in any way as long as I can.

How long have you been walking long-distance for?

I’ve been a long distance walker for many years but stepped it up a couple of years ago when training for a two day 60 km walk.

Where is your favourite place to walk?

Stanley Park sea wall in Vancouver

What message do you have for the women and children at Nellie’s?

I would like the women and children to know that there is an end to the abuse and violence they suffer now that they are on the road to finding a better life through Nellie’s care and direction. I am so thankful that I was able to become a strong independent person (in large part thanks to my mother) after living in an abusive household during my childhood. It will get better one day at a time.

What is your power song?

My power song is ‘Find the Strength Within’ by Full Blown Chaos.

Nellie’s Women & Accessibility Group

Posted on: August 3rd, 2011 by Nellie's No Comments

This summer Nellie’s is proud to introduce a new and exciting program, our Women & Accessibility Group!

Held at our accessibile Community Support & Outreach Office in partnership with Springtide Resouces, this group meets once a week to discuss issues of violence and oppression and to develop strategies to eliminate barriers to the full inclusion of women with disAbilities in society. Participants in this group enjoy peer support and an opportunity to network.

Recent topics covered in this group have included healthy relationships, wellness and self-care, and accessing community resources .  Last week women enjoyed a trip to the movies.

At Nellie’s we recognize that disability is not the inability of an individual to perform the functions of daily living, but the degree to which society is unable to accommodate the individual differences of its citizens.

One of the most important things we do  is support women survivors to be advocates for themselves.  At our Women & Accessibility Group we work with women so that they can develop the tools to become advocates for themselves and others.
