Outreach Program

Nellie’s Community Support and Outreach (CSO) Program provides support and services both to women and children who have left the shelter and to women and children living in the community.  Individual and group support are provided through the following programs:

Supper Surprise
Fresh and non-perishable food donations from Second Harvest are packaged up and handed out to between 60 and 70 women per week.  Attendance at this program increases every year, while donations remain steady, thus producing a demand for food greater than the supply.

Evening Supper Drop-In
Women and children are invited to Nellie’s for a hearty and delicious home-cooked meal.  Open to women and children in our community who are homeless or living in poverty, this weekly program provides women an opportunity to enjoy good food and good company!  Attendance at this program averages 40 women per week.

HerShare
Information is the key! The HerShare Program offers women an opportunity to come together to learn about important issues and to gain skills they will find helpful in everyday life.  Workshops are designed with input from the women on the topics they’d like to learn about.  Popular topics include: self-care, healthy living, housing and tenant rights, and gaining Canadian experience.

Outings and Events
Women and children who attend CSO Programs enjoy special outings and events including International Women’s Day Rally and March, the Dyke March and Pride Parade, Take Back the Night Rally and March, and the December 6th Vigil.  Fun, recreational trips are also planned to places like the Sugar Bush, Canada’s Wonderland, the Botanical Gardens, sporting games, concerts, the movies.
