“Little fundraising party” raises $7,500 for Nellie’s!

Posted on: April 30th, 2019 by Nellie's No Comments

Karaoke-Edit

For the third year in a row, two friends joined together to belt out karaoke tunes in support of Nellie’s Shelter. But this wasn’t your average karaoke night out; this was Karaoke for a Cause organized by Carrie Adelstein and MJ Cyr.

Held on March 23, 2019 at the Centre for Social Innovation on Bathurst Street, over 100 people came out to party, laugh, dance, and sing their hearts out alongside By Request Live Band Karaoke to raise money for Nellie’s. And raise money they did! Through donations at the event, as well as online donations from supporters who couldn’t make it, Carrie and MJ raised $3,500!

Add that to the amounts they raised at the previous two events, and their “little fundraising party” has raised a total of $7,500 over the last 3 years!

“I like the idea that we’re women helping women,” says MJ, who works at the AGO. “Everything that Nellie’s does and stands for are in line with what we believe in and what we stand for.”

Adds Carrie, an Arbonne consultant: “It’s unfortunate that women’s shelters are something that are still needed. But the more they are still needed, the more we want to help Nellie’s and give back.”

They organized their first karaoke fundraiser in 2017 in just 10 days. At that time, Carrie and MJ simply wanted a chance to sing together while also raising a little money for their charity of choice. A few dozen friends and a live karaoke band later, and the pair accomplished both goals. Since then, the event has grown from a simple party fundraiser, to a major event with a committee of volunteers and over 100 guests singing along in support of Nellie’s.

“We hope we can inspire other people to do their own version of whatever they want to do to help their community. We’re helping Nellie’s Shelter and helping other women but what we’re actually doing is something really simple that anyone can do to make a difference,” says MJ.

Carrie and MJ are already dreaming big for next year’s Karaoke for a Cause. “You don’t have to be a charity yourself, or affiliated with a charity, to give back and raise money for a cause you believe in. It can just start with ‘hey, let’s throw a party and see what we can do.’ That’s all you need to make a difference because from there, it can snowball into something incredible,” says Carrie.

Thank you, Carrie and MJ! Your generosity these last three years means so much to the women and their children who come to Nellie’s. We’re already warming up our vocal chords for next year’s Karaoke for a Cause!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month – Fran Odette

Twenty-seven years ago, moved to a city to go to school.  During that time, I found myself also trying to seek help to leave an emotionally abusive relationship.  I wished that back then, when I was trying to find supports that there was a place like Nellie’s Women’s Shelter, because it provides accessible services to many women, including women with disabilities.

Nellie’s recognizes that there are factors such as poverty, lack of affordable and accessible housing and violence put women and their children at increased risk. I am out of the situation now, thanks to the support of family and friends.  Since returning back to Toronto, I have been working with other survivors and anti-violence workers to address the causes of violence against all women and children.  Participating in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon is another way of giving back.

This is going to be my 2nd year participating in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. The first year I wheeled 5 Km and made it to the finish line in just over 1 hour. This year I will try to complete my second 5 Km in under an hour…watch out here I come!!

Being part of this event gives me the opportunity to give back to Nellies Women’s Shelter and to promote the work that they do to help women and their children.  In the near future, Nellie’s is working with the community to find a new home.  A home that is both physically accessible and inclusive of all women who are striving for a life free from violence.  Please click here to help me support Nellie’s in the Scotia Toronto Waterfront Marathon

Scotia Toronto Waterfront Marathon – Helen Nowak

HelenNowak

On Sunday, October 18th, Helen Nowak will be participating in her third Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon as part of Nellie’s Team. Will you join us?

Thanks to generous supporters like you, the Scotiabank Charity Challenge raises much needed funds to support the innovative and essential work of Nellie’s Shelter. It connects us to dedicated people like you while having fun.

Helen first connected with Nellie’s thanks to the Scotiabank Charity Challenge. Searching for a charity to support for her 5k run, Helen found Nellie’s profile and an affinity for our work, values, and mission. In 2012, she joined our Board of Directors where she now serves as our treasurer.

Helen is a union-side labour lawyer by day with an impressive resume under her belt. She has experience working for both a federal public service union in Ottawa and a healthcare union in Toronto. While pursuing legal studies at McGill University, Helen involved herself in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.  These include pro bono work filling applications at the Human Rights Commission and the Police Ethics Commission on behalf of complainants, and providing legal information at a poverty law clinic in Montreal.

Prior to her legal career, Helen worked in the non-profit sector at the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research, and earned her master’s degree in Sociology/African Development Studies at York University. It is Helen’s skills combined with her passion for non-profits and advocacy that make her such an important member of Nellie’s family.

Why is Helen participating again this year? Because our funding has been frozen for the past four years. Fundraising is essential if we are to maintain Nellie’s integral services and advocacy for women and their children facing violence.

You can join Helen and others on Nellie’s Team. Help us reach our goal to raise $20,000 and end violence against women!

You can run, walk, or wheel! All money raised goes directly to support Nellie’s work with women and children. CLICK HERE TO JOIN US!

If you can’t run, you can still make a difference. Please consider sponsoring Helen and Nellie’s Team with a donation of $25, $50, or $100. You can click here to Sponsor Nellie’s Team.

If you have any questions or need help registering, please contact us at fundraising@nellies.org. Or call us at 416.461.8903 and ask to speak with Janna or Amran.

Thank you once again for making a difference in the lives of the women and children of Nellie’s.

Scotia Toronto Waterfront Marathon – Fran Odette!

Posted on: August 27th, 2015 by Nellie's No Comments

Race day is fast approaching. Fran is ready. Are you? On Sunday, October 18th, Fran Odette will be participating in The Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon as part of Nellie’s Team. And you can join us! One of Nellie’s most ardent supporters, Fran first came to Nellie’s to train staff on issues pertaining to violence against women with disabilities. She was thrilled when she was invited to join Nellie’s Board of Directors. Now, six years later, Fran is the president of the Board. Fran is also an integral member of the Fund Development Committee, and a quintessential voice on disability and accessibility issues as the chair of Nellie’s Accessibility Advisory Committee.

Although her involvement with Nellie’s may seem like a full-time job, Fran is also a consultant at the Institution on Research and Development on Inclusion and Society (IRIS), and a faculty member at George Brown College; she teaches in the Assaulted Women and Children Counsellor Advocate program, and co-developed and teaches a general education course in critical disability studies. Fran’s instinctive abilities as an educator and trainer are prevalent in whatever she does. And Fran’s enthusiasm for her work and for Nellie’s has inspired many of us to make a difference in the lives of women and children facing violence. For the second consecutive year, Fran will be raising funds for Nellie’s as part of the Scotiabank Charity Challenge. What fuels Fran to cross the finish line in October?

  • The camaraderie. It’s a great opportunity to spend time with fabulous volunteers and have fun!
  • The chance to support Nellie’s essential and innovative work. For over 40 years, Nellie’s has helped to rebuild the lives of women and their children facing violence, thanks to generous supporters like you.

The anticipation is building for Fran and the others on Nellie’s Marathon Team. It’s not too late to get involved and share in this excitement! Join Nellie’s Team andhelp us reach our goal to raise $20,000 and end violence against women.  Run, walk or stroll. All money raised goes directly to Nellie’s to support our work with women and children. If you can’t run, you can still make a difference. Please consider sponsoring Fran and the Nellie’s Team with a donation of $25, $50, or $100.
