Tub Time Fundraising Campaign!

Posted on: November 3rd, 2017 by Nellie's No Comments

Effie

Welcome Nellie’s Tub Time FUNdraising Campaign, the products included on this listing will help our team raise money for Nellie’s Shelter for Women & Children. All funds raised will be designated towards supporting the 14 toddlers and 4 infants who are at our Shelter right now. Please click the link to go to the Campaign page and enter nellies17 as the password http://shop.zeroinonwellness.com/product/nellies-shelter/

With the closing of one of Toronto’s largest Women’s Shelters earlier this year, we accepted many women with small children and are now over capacity!   Our routine changed as we were faced with the mounting costs to care for these young children, we turned to social media for help, and the community response was tremendous. Hundreds of individuals and corporations donated diapers and baby formula, and made financial donations. We want to take this opportunity to thank the community for rallying around us in our time of need!

We are hoping to raise more funds with this campaign so we can have the flexibility to respond to the future needs of these children.  Our campaign will end on November 17, 2017 and your orders will be delivered to you directly, on or before December 5 or can be picked up at Nellie’s Admin Office, Monday – Friday, 9-5 only.  Be sure to select Nellie’s Admin Office delivery option during the checkout process if you will be picking up your orders from Nellie’s Admin Office, 754 Queen St E). All products will be gift wrapped in festive holiday packaging. Prices include any applicable taxes. Shipping/delivery is extra.

Thank you for supporting our Tub Time FUNdraising Campaign!  Your support makes a world of difference to the 14 toddlers, 4 infants and their moms currently in our care and we really appreciate your help!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month – Fran Odette

Posted on: October 1st, 2015 by Nellie's No Comments

FranPromo

Twenty-seven years ago, moved to a city to go to school.  During that time, I found myself also trying to seek help to leave an emotionally abusive relationship.  I wished that back then, when I was trying to find supports that there was a place like Nellie’s Women’s Shelter, because it provides accessible services to many women, including women with disabilities.

Nellie’s recognizes that there are factors such as poverty, lack of affordable and accessible housing and violence put women and their children at increased risk. I am out of the situation now, thanks to the support of family and friends.  Since returning back to Toronto, I have been working with other survivors and anti-violence workers to address the causes of violence against all women and children.  Participating in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon is another way of giving back.

This is going to be my 2nd year participating in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. The first year I wheeled 5 Km and made it to the finish line in just over 1 hour. This year I will try to complete my second 5 Km in under an hour…watch out here I come!!

Being part of this event gives me the opportunity to give back to Nellies Women’s Shelter and to promote the work that they do to help women and their children.  In the near future, Nellie’s is working with the community to find a new home.  A home that is both physically accessible and inclusive of all women who are striving for a life free from violence.  Please click here to help me support Nellie’s in the Scotia Toronto Waterfront Marathon

Scotia Toronto Waterfront Marathon – Helen Nowak

HelenNowak

On Sunday, October 18th, Helen Nowak will be participating in her third Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon as part of Nellie’s Team. Will you join us?

Thanks to generous supporters like you, the Scotiabank Charity Challenge raises much needed funds to support the innovative and essential work of Nellie’s Shelter. It connects us to dedicated people like you while having fun.

Helen first connected with Nellie’s thanks to the Scotiabank Charity Challenge. Searching for a charity to support for her 5k run, Helen found Nellie’s profile and an affinity for our work, values, and mission. In 2012, she joined our Board of Directors where she now serves as our treasurer.

Helen is a union-side labour lawyer by day with an impressive resume under her belt. She has experience working for both a federal public service union in Ottawa and a healthcare union in Toronto. While pursuing legal studies at McGill University, Helen involved herself in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.  These include pro bono work filling applications at the Human Rights Commission and the Police Ethics Commission on behalf of complainants, and providing legal information at a poverty law clinic in Montreal.

Prior to her legal career, Helen worked in the non-profit sector at the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research, and earned her master’s degree in Sociology/African Development Studies at York University. It is Helen’s skills combined with her passion for non-profits and advocacy that make her such an important member of Nellie’s family.

Why is Helen participating again this year? Because our funding has been frozen for the past four years. Fundraising is essential if we are to maintain Nellie’s integral services and advocacy for women and their children facing violence.

You can join Helen and others on Nellie’s Team. Help us reach our goal to raise $20,000 and end violence against women!

You can run, walk, or wheel! All money raised goes directly to support Nellie’s work with women and children. CLICK HERE TO JOIN US!

If you can’t run, you can still make a difference. Please consider sponsoring Helen and Nellie’s Team with a donation of $25, $50, or $100. You can click here to Sponsor Nellie’s Team.

If you have any questions or need help registering, please contact us at fundraising@nellies.org. Or call us at 416.461.8903 and ask to speak with Janna or Amran.

Thank you once again for making a difference in the lives of the women and children of Nellie’s.

Scotia Toronto Waterfront Marathon – Fran Odette!

Posted on: August 27th, 2015 by Nellie's No Comments

Race day is fast approaching. Fran is ready. Are you? On Sunday, October 18th, Fran Odette will be participating in The Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon as part of Nellie’s Team. And you can join us! One of Nellie’s most ardent supporters, Fran first came to Nellie’s to train staff on issues pertaining to violence against women with disabilities. She was thrilled when she was invited to join Nellie’s Board of Directors. Now, six years later, Fran is the president of the Board. Fran is also an integral member of the Fund Development Committee, and a quintessential voice on disability and accessibility issues as the chair of Nellie’s Accessibility Advisory Committee.

Although her involvement with Nellie’s may seem like a full-time job, Fran is also a consultant at the Institution on Research and Development on Inclusion and Society (IRIS), and a faculty member at George Brown College; she teaches in the Assaulted Women and Children Counsellor Advocate program, and co-developed and teaches a general education course in critical disability studies. Fran’s instinctive abilities as an educator and trainer are prevalent in whatever she does. And Fran’s enthusiasm for her work and for Nellie’s has inspired many of us to make a difference in the lives of women and children facing violence. For the second consecutive year, Fran will be raising funds for Nellie’s as part of the Scotiabank Charity Challenge. What fuels Fran to cross the finish line in October?

  • The camaraderie. It’s a great opportunity to spend time with fabulous volunteers and have fun!
  • The chance to support Nellie’s essential and innovative work. For over 40 years, Nellie’s has helped to rebuild the lives of women and their children facing violence, thanks to generous supporters like you.

The anticipation is building for Fran and the others on Nellie’s Marathon Team. It’s not too late to get involved and share in this excitement! Join Nellie’s Team andhelp us reach our goal to raise $20,000 and end violence against women.  Run, walk or stroll. All money raised goes directly to Nellie’s to support our work with women and children. If you can’t run, you can still make a difference. Please consider sponsoring Fran and the Nellie’s Team with a donation of $25, $50, or $100.

Every 6 days in Canada, a woman is murdered by her intimate partner. Thankfully, thousands of others survive. That is why our beds at Nellie’s Shelter are full. With no end in sight for the growing need for shelter, we must raise the necessary funds to ensure that we can help as many women and children as we can.

Nellie’s Online Holiday Auction is held every year over the holiday season, A unique and highly anticipated event, the auction features a wide and eclectic array of gifts ranging from novelty and household items, baked good, dinners/entertainment, gift certificates, travel packages, services, and much, much more. Donated items and gifts of services are put up for auction online through our website and sold to the highest bidders.

The feedback about this event over the past two years has been amazing! Gift-giving for loved-ones now holds extra-special meaning by also helping the women and children at Nellie’s. Thanks to thousands of our friends and supporters who helped us spread the word, we raised over $4700 last year. This year we hope to raise over $5000. But we can’t do it alone. Please donate an item for auction to help us reach our goal!

To view last year’s auction site and items, please visit www.nelliesmarketplace.com for a sample of what to expect. 100% of the proceeds raised through the auction will go directly to support the women and children at Nellie’s. This includes helping to buy food, arrange for transportation and the necessary supports that women and their children need for a chance at a better life.

In return for your kind donation, we will be happy to recognize your goodwill through our publications including our Annual Report, website, and social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

This year marks Nellie’s 40th Anniversary. Through the support from our community and donors such as you, Nellie’s is able to rebuild the lives of women and their children during times of need.
